Where Are They Now: Catching Up With Cassidy West

We recently caught up with former RSC Program Analyst and Trachtenberg MPA alumna (2013) Cassidy West to find out more about where her career in regulatory affairs is taking her. Cassidy recently started her “dream job” as a Cannabis Policy and Rules Coordinator at the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board in Olympia, WA.

Cassidy describes the legal cannabis industry as navigating uncharted waters. “Currently, I am collaborating with FDA and regulators from other legal states to develop a regulatory framework for products that contain THC, CBD, and synthetic cannabinoids,” she reports. Her experience at the GW Regulatory Studies Center and in the Trachtenberg MPA program have been pivotal for her professional development. “To be effective in my current position, it is necessary that I utilize all of the skills and experience I gained in the MPA program and while working at RSC.”

Having previously worked in cannabis policy in the private sector for almost a decade in Colorado, Cassidy recognizes the significance of Washington and Colorado as models for the development of cannabis policy, especially as more states legalize cannabis and the industry evolves. “All eyes are on Colorado and Washington since they were the first U.S. states to legalize. It is exciting to have the opportunity to play such a big role in developing policies that shape a new industry.” She also emphasized relying heavily on RSC’s research and publications for guidance while undertaking an initiative to broaden stakeholder engagement and increase public participation to improve transparency and accountability in the rulemaking process.

Cassidy fondly recalls her favorite memories from the MPA program, particularly taking the Regulatory Comment Clinic course taught by Professor Susan Dudley and appreciates the invaluable insights she shared from her experience as a federal regulator. Although she is enjoying the many outdoor adventure opportunities in Washington State, we had to ask: Is there anything you miss about Washington, DC? “It was so great to be a part of the wonky community at GW! And writing for the wonky audience of the Regulatory Studies Center!”
